Second off, if you haven't heard of this guy, check him out. On a related note, they've also tackled quite a few tracks from various Sonic games in the past as well.įirst off, I think video game music can be absolutely beautiful in it's own right. This can be freely downloaded and contains some of the community's best musicians, often working together with brilliant results. and Burning Rangers, with the former receiving its own tribute album from OverClocked ReMix that is called Lucid Dreaming. I forgot to mention this before, but I absolutely love Sonic Team's soundtracks to NiGHTS into dreams. Best of all, they recorded a live show that was released in a CD+DVD set! You'll definitely be at home if you enjoy breakneck-paced Hammond organ workouts, classic style guitar riffing and vocal gymnastics. More than any other act, it's Crush 40 that I best associate with the early 2000s Sonic franchise, and Open Your Heart, their Sonic Adventure theme, is a highlight.įinally for now, I'd suggest you try and find the two studio volumes of Segarocks, a collection of vintage tracks rearranged in a style closer to that of its performers, featuring the core of a little-known Japanese Deep Purple tribute act called Cheap Purple. Other VGM artists whose work I enjoy are Tim "CoLD SToRAGE" Wright, who produced the alternate Sega Saturn soundtracks to WipEout and WipEout 2097, along with Jun Senoue, the latter a member of Crush 40 along with Johnny Gioeli, formerly of Hardline and currently also the vocalist for Axel Rudi Pell.

I'd equally suggest those interested check out the first three Panzer Dragoon games for their music, plus anything by Richard Jacques - especially Sonic 3D, Sonic R, Metropolis Street Racer and Headhunter. Many of the games created by Tetsuya Mizuguchi have great soundtracks, including Space Channel 5, Rez and Lumines. Again, I consider this an absolute masterpiece.įrom around the same period, I also really like the licensed Avex Trax contributions to Sega Touring Car, plus the eclectic music of Sega Rally 2. However, both he and the aforementioned Mitsuyoshi were involved with the Shenmue series, which is by far the most ambitious project Sega ever worked on, both in terms of its gameplay and musical content.

Yuzo Koshiro was the artist behind those incredible soundtracks for the classic era Streets of Rage/Bare Knuckle and Shinobi games, though he's not done much comparable to these high benchmarks in my opinion. Really, it was worth chasing these down, and I wish they were available domestically. As a member of both the Sega Sound Team and later B-univ (with guitarist Koichi Namiki and drummer/co-vocalist David Leytze), he's also responsible for a trilogy of vocal "image albums" based around the Virtua Fighter series, which are some of my favourites in his catalogue. As a massive fan of Sega's work from the mid-to-late 1990s, I'd have to recommend the work of its many in-house musicians from this period.įirst of all, there's Takenobu Mitsuyoshi, who is perhaps best known for the soundtrack to Daytona USA.
